PHOTOINTERPRETATION

Although Aero-Data's mainstay is conventional and digital photogrammetry, a very significant service that we provide on a nationwide basis is environmental photointerpretation. Photointerpretation is the science of locating, describing, and determining the meaning of objects in photography. Seen below is an example of a historical study of a site.

Scroll your mouse over the dates to see how this particular area changed over time from a refinery in the 1930's, to a residential area in the 1990's. Mapped interpretations for each date can be viewed as well. To view a larger version of each aerial photograph, simply click on the appropriate date or photograph.

At Aero-Data, photointerpretation is conducted at one of our digital photogrammetric workstations, which allow the interpreter to view the site in 3-D on a 20" computer monitor while mapping significant features. Stereo models for different dates can be rapidly toggled back and forth on the monitor, which allows the interpreter to better detect changes that have occurred over time. As significant features are identified in the stereo photography, they are outlined, color coded, labeled, and mapped on the computer screen. When it is appropriate, the workstations can also be used to generate terrain models (contour lines) of the site for each date. The final interpreted and mapped images can then be provided digitally, on dye-sublimation prints, paper plots, or in anaglyph (3-D) format.
